The fifth grade has asked family and friends to send postcards to help us in our study of the United States and Canada.

So far, we have received postcards from Wisconsin, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Florida. Thank you to all those who have participated!  If you or someone you know would like to join in, see the note we sent below.

Dear Family and Friends,
We are writing to you from our classroom at Holy Child Academy in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. We will begin the fifth-grade year studying the United States and Canada in social studies, so we are inviting you to help us make connections about this region with a postcard project.  Please send us a picture postcard (or send us a picture with a letter) telling us about the state or province where you live. Do you live in an urban or rural area? What are the land and climate like? What do you do for fun?  Please send your card to the following address:
Grade 5
Holy Child Academy
475 Shadeland Ave
Drexel Hill, PA 19026

If you include your return address, we will gladly send you a reply. Thanks for being part of our project. We can hardly wait to hear from you!

                                                                                     Gratefully,
                                                                                               Mrs. Ulmer and the fifth-grade
                                                                                               students of Holy Child Academy

The sixth-graders have begun reading Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief, a modern-day story based on Greek mythology. In order to build background knowledge, the students read excerpts of D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths and conducted some online research on the gods, goddesses, demigods, and creatures of Greek mythology. They wrote and illustrated biopoems based on what they learned.

These readers are doing a terrific job of citing evidence to support their thinking, and some have already gotten the hang of parenthetical citations!

Grades 5 through 8 worked together at community time to bake cookies.  They were sold at school this week, and the effort raised over $140 to donate to cancer research in honor of Ms. Stephanie Selden.

 What great teamwork!

The fifth and sixth graders are looking forward to this year's Halloween Mission Party.  This year's proceeds will go to one of our sister schools, the SHCJ mission school in the Batey Lecheria, an area in the Dominican Republic. Watch the video below to learn more about how this mission serves so many in need.
