Welcome back to school! The fifth and sixth graders kicked off the year by celebrating their summer reading.  Some students chose to present a Wow! Project, and they certainly did wow us with their dioramas, slideshows, models, and presentations. Some students created an experience for the audience so that we could enter the worlds of their books. As audience members, we designed and conquered a ninja obstacle course, played a board game, looked through a lens to a different dimension, and even tasted a sampling of donuts!  These projects generated some real excitement about reading.

The excitement continued at the unveiling of our classroom library, and the students have each selected a book from various genres to read independently. Some students had trouble choosing only one book, so we developed a basket of "books on deck" in which students can store the books they would like to read next. We are off to a terrific start building reading stamina and practicing applying reading strategies.

In fifth-grade social studies, we are studying the geography of the United States and Canada. We are learning about how this region's landforms, bodies of water, and natural resources affect transportation and the economy.  We are also learning to identify all 50 states on a map. Some of our students have already mastered this! If you would like to see how you measure up, try your hand at it here.

Stay tuned for more exciting learning news from the fifth and sixth grades at HCA!
